Up to the 1920ís the House was called HENDRE GYDA. The word HENDRE is usually associated with a very early site and goes back to a time when cattle were taken to the hills in the summer and brought down to the HENDRE for the winter. The recent building has undergone many changes. The oldest part dating back from around 1570 is on the right as you enter the front door. It was added onto in the 18 th Century but these additions were completely absorbed when around 1840 it was bought by the Kinmel Estate and became the Agents house. The present doorway was built at the end of a passage alongside the original house and a whole new wing was added to the left of it. The old building was altered to match the new work and this is the building you see before you today. The Kinmel Estate had grown rich in the early 19 th Century from the copper mines at Amlwch in Anglesey which for three quarters of a country produced two thirds of the Worlds copper production. Its owners the Hughes family lived in the regal splendour at Kinmel. Hughes Robert Hughes it was said lived up to his initials and in 1872 erected the present Mansion. In the 1920ís the then owner, Colonel H.B.L. Hughes, a bachelor and Colonel of Engineers who was also a competent amateur marine artist sold the Mansion and came to live at Hendre Gyda, changing its name to Kinmel Manor.
