The George Hotel is a fine-looking and substantial redbrick building standing prominently in the centre of the friendly little Fenland town of Chatteris. Proprietor Robbie Lyons, a cheerful Irishman from County Laios, has devoted much time and effort to refurbishing the spacious interior, giving it a stylishly updated look that has widened its appeal from the traditional pub regulars to a younger generation. It remains a popular `local', with a wide range of cask ales, beers and lagers always available, and is also establishing a growing reputation for its excellent cooking; the varied menus are served every session except Sunday evening. Robbie's jovial disposition, flair and enthusiasm, along with the friendly presence of manageress Sarah Thompson, have helped to create a very relaxed ambience, with plenty of lively conversation, and in fine weather the patio is a popular spot for a little party or get together. The George is also an excellent base for business or leisure visitors, and the eight guest bedrooms (five with en suite facilities) are all equipped with television and tea/coffee trays. There's plenty to see in Chatteris, and the Chatteris Museum and Council Chamber features a series of interesting displays on Fenland life and the development of the town. The Church of St Peter and St Paul is also well worth a visit, with a number of original 14th century features surviving extensive modernisation.
